How Renewable Energy and Viticulture Can Thrive Together

How can renewable energy be integrated into agricultural production without compromising food production?

This is one of the key questions being addressed by the HarvRESt project. In a new project video, partners from Spain showcase how innovative renewable energy solutions are being tested in real agricultural environments, helping farmers move towards a more sustainable and climate-neutral future.

As coordinator of HarvRESt, CIRCE is leading the development of advanced digital tools designed to support decision-making on farms. One of these tools is the Agricultural Virtual Power Plant (AVPP), a digital platform that combines agricultural and energy data to analyse different renewable energy scenarios and assess their potential impact on farm productivity, costs and sustainability.

The video also highlights two Spanish vineyard demonstration sites.

At Viñas del Vero, activities focus on the electrification of agricultural machinery and the optimisation of renewable energy use in wine production. The vineyard contributes valuable operational data that helps improve and validate the project's digital models.

Meanwhile, Viñedos del Río Tajo is exploring agrivoltaics, assessing how solar energy generation can coexist with vineyard production while delivering additional environmental and economic benefits. Researchers are analysing different photovoltaic configurations and their impact on crop performance and local growing conditions.

Beyond technology development, HarvRESt aims to foster agro-energy communities, support new business models and contribute evidence-based recommendations for future European policies on renewable energy in agriculture.
